The Holiday of Halloween

The (arguably) most popular holiday in North America can be seen as many things: a time of terror and devil worshipers, a time of childish fun and free candy, a time of great commercial sell outs, or a time when evil spirits and lonely ghosts walk among the living. It all depends on perspective and opinion since no one is actually right or wrong.
For me, Halloween is a fun holiday with scares and costumes and overall family fun. Spending time with loved ones on a night of supposed terror, and having fun in a variety of way. There's a ritual for my family though.
The original point of Halloween was for humans to disguise themselves as ghosts and monsters to hide from them, so to me it makes sense that the costumes we wear in the present must also be spooky and scary or related to something scary. My family starts of Halloween by dressing up in such costumes.
Then, to show how much you love the holiday and spending time with our friends, walk around with them at night to show off your costumes, and of course get rewarded with treats like candy, pop, chips and raisin boxes! (An O-Henry bar is the treat on Halloween since its hard to find someone who hands them out)
After taking the treats home and inspecting it for bad things some bad people could have put in the candy or raisins, I celebrate getting so much free treats by watching scary movies with my family and/or friends. Usually its just me and my mom.
That's Halloween for me every year (until 3 years ago when it turned into scaring kids who come to the door instead of going out to get candy), and I love it! A night of fun and scares, two things I love, as well as no longer having to worry about looking good to the public - because this night I'm wearing a disguise! That is the spirit of Halloween.
While I can see why some people fear the holiday or disprove of it - since it rivals Christmas with selling items that you'll use for one night then probably never use again all for commercialism - I can't see how anyone could actually hate Halloween.
Its all about fun, just like so many other popular holidays. There's no way a person can avoid fun on Halloween night: walking around in a costume with children, dressing up in a costume to get free candy, dressing up and going to a party, dressing up in a scary outfit and scaring people, staying at home watching scary movies, there's so many things to do on Halloween that its impossible to be bored.
If someone hates Halloween, then they're also saying that they hate fun!

  1. Nice post Jackie. You've expressed yourself clearly. Just some minor technical issues.
    - variety of ways - plural
    - show how much we love the holiday..not you
    - inspecting them - plural for treats
    - it's just me...it's all about fun...it's impossible to be...contractions
